Dad and Mom arrived at the hospital shortly before midnight to begin inducing my mother's labor. A week over due, she was not dilated at all and had yet to feel any contractions. Understandably, she was somewhat nervous as this was her first time giving birth.
About 1:00 a.m. they began the medication to induce labor. Shortly thereafter, she began to notice small contractions. By 5:00 a.m. they were increasing in strength and frequency. Soon the pain was unbearable and Mom had to request an epidural around 6:45 a.m. As the nurse checked her cervix, they found she was dilated to 3 cm.
To Mom's relief, the epidural worked wonders to ease her pain. For a few more hours she rested until the doctor arrived around 8:30 a.m. After the doctor did a quick inspection, she reported that Mom was now dilated to 4 or 5 cm. She was progressing wonderfully—no need for petocin to stimulate contractions.
From here on out, things started to happen quickly. Next thing we knew, Mom was already dilated to a 7 or 8 and the doctor and nurses were making their final preparations. They barely had time to finish before Mom was completely dilated and the doctor gave her the go ahead to start pushing around 9:20 a.m.
Twenty minutes later—yes, twenty minutes—at 9:43 a.m. I was born into this world! It all seemed to happen so quickly. Luckily, Grandma LaFrance arrived about five minutes before I was born—just in time to watch most the exciting part.
So there you have it. It was quite an amazing experience for Mom and Dad and I'm still trying to get used to this new world, but I'm excited to be here!
